When looking to buy the brass and aluminum raw materials referenced in the above sections, you cannot do better than finding a well-stocked K&S "Hardware Metal Center,"  typically located at your local hobby store or (as shown below) at ACE Hardware.  This one even had the odd-sized 7/32" dia. brass tube needed for the hero wind-up mechanism:
